Taken from the Step

Melinda Page

This book is a culmination of a year’s work of what started out as a personal challenge by author/photographer Melinda Page to take a photograph daily for one year from the same step at Toowoon Bay on the Central Coast of NSW. The rocky outcrop where Toowoon Bay beach and the dog exercise area divide caught Melinda’s imagination with the constant environmental changes, the activities that surrounded her and the simple beauty of the sunrises, sunsets, wild weather and brilliant days.

Using only a 10.1 megapixel camera in order to capture what she could see with her own eye – a photographic diary – the project soon grew. The daily photographs led to interest by locals and visitors to the area, stories in the local paper and monthly exhibitions at the Toowoon Bay Surf Life Saving Club.

Melinda moved to the Central Coast of NSW from Sydney in 2000, fell in love with the beauty of the area, the ‘laid back’ lifestyle and friendly people, and decided to make it her home for good.

Having previously had poetry and artwork published both in Australia and overseas it wasn’t until she became inspired by the ever-changing face of Toowoon Bay that she turned her hand to photography.

After capturing the essence of each day through the lens, the photographs of the year spent shooting at the Bay have now been compiled for all to enjoy.
